Changing Ideas was established by David Graham who, as a consequence of his 23 year old son becoming paralysed in a diving accident, changed careers and undertook an MA in photojournalism. With his business background he recognised that many concerned organisations and individuals were frequently unable to successfully realise their humanitarian projects because they lacked essential business skills and other resources. He felt there was a gap in the humanitarian sector for an organisation that brought NGO’s and individuals together within a framework that provided the necessary skills to turn their ideas into reality.

The inspiration for Changing Ideas was the partnership between the successful photojournalist Marcus Bleasdale and the charity Human Rights Watch. They were aware that a major cause of conflict in the Congo was a battle amongst local warlords to control lucrative gold mines. Having discovered that gold was being sold to Swiss gold refineries, they presented documentary and visual evidence to these corporations and their shareholders. As a result they stopped buying the gold and new arms sanctions were brought against the warlords.

What do we do?

We support and develop the use of photography in humanitarian campaigns. To this end we advise and support charities to develop their communications capabilities and make more effective use of visual media in fundraising, activism and advocacy. We also support individual projects involving substantial partnerships between photographers and NGO’s.

How do we do this?

We have raised substantial funding and established an extensive network of business, political and media contacts. We apply these resources to provide imaginative solutions to humanitarian issues.

Please note: We are looking for projects that can demonstrate the potential for measurable change.

Although we expect to receive many projects that are highly worthwhile, some may not be selected for several reasons including geography, beyond our capabilities, scale, our assessment of the likelihood of success and other.

How do we select the projects?

We operate a rolling applications procedure. Applications are assessed by a panel of experts with legal, medical, business, economic, political and media expertise. This panel will ensure that projects are both feasible and practical and capable of achieving a measurable impact within a specific time frame.
